Summer used to be fun…

In high school and college, I loved summer. I loved having a break from tests and homework. I loved getting jobs and watching my bank account fill up. I loved having time to hang out with my friends pretty much whenever and wherever we wanted.* As an adult, I loved summer because I love warm weather, lots of sunshine, and being able to sit outside at restaurants and on friends’ porches.

Then I became a parent.

*Public transportation! How I miss you so!

…Now? Not so much.

These days, summer is a jigsaw puzzle of babysitters and summer camps and obligatory trips and temper tantrums staged by dysregulated humans.* I always think I’ll spend my summer finishing a draft of a novel or finally pitching agents or launching a new class or building a rocketship to go to the moon. All of these are equally likely outcomes, in that ABSOLUTELY none of them will happen. Ever.

The more summers I’ve done as a parent, the more realistic I’ve gotten about my schedule. From May until halfway through August, I know I’ll be useless. Instead of beating myself up about it, I plan accordingly.

*By dysregulated humans, I mean me. My child is flawless, and if you disagree, I WILL FIGHT YOU. (Sorry, I don’t know where that came from, except it’s definitely because of my summer dysregulation.)

Summer is a great time to revise! Join me for Revise Your Book this July.

This year, I’m not just planning for myself.

This year, dearest celestial bunnykins, I am also planning for you.

Here are a few resources for you to get your writing on this summer:

Moon Rabbit’s Self-Paced Classes

Want to write but need some structure? Moon Rabbit’s got you! Check out Moon Rabbit’s affordable, self-paced classes on everything from writing and structuring op-eds to drafting picture books to decolonizing your creative practice. Do the same exercises we do in class, but at your own pace, and in the comfort of your own home. No pants required!

Moon Rabbit’s Book Lists

Personally, nothing inspires me more than reading. Every time I finish a good book, I’m like, “I want to try that!!!” (Surgeon General’s Warning* About Becoming a Writer: reading will never be the same again.) If you’re looking for some good reads but aren’t sure where to start, check out Moon Rabbit’s Book Lists on Bookshop.org. From craft books to lists of trans writers to romances to cozy mysteries, Moon Rabbit’s got you! Plus, you’ll be supporting indie bookstores, and a teeny tiny percentage of each sale (like 20 cents) goes to meeeeeeeeeee.

*By Surgeon General, I of course mean me.
