A few weeks ago, I asked my gen alpha tween monster who uses her disturbingly large vocabulary to craft mind bendingly original insults that don’t scare me at all my beloved child to stop what she was doing to eat or take a bath or some other necessary life thing, she said, “But I can’t! I’m playing!”
I looked up from my afterschool glass of wine the incredibly mindful and also very earth conscious parenting activity I was undoubtedly engaged in and saw that she wasn’t playing, she was writing.
A chapter book.
About witches, but also, at its core, about abandonment issues and the Jungian approach to art and life.*
As she grumbled her way over to do whatever I’d just told her to do, I suddenly remembered: oh, yeah! Writing IS playing!
Sometimes, when you make your art your profession, you forget that there was a time you did it not because you had to, but because you couldn’t stop. Because it was the thing you wanted to do more than anything else in the world. Because it was just plain fun.
This, my dear moon rabbits, is something I’d like to remember this holiday season. I hope you will too! It’s also the spirit I want to bring to Moon Rabbit’s personal essays class this Saturday, which is one reason I would love to see you there.
