Whether you are a writer or not, you have probably heard the importance of “building your brand.” Although this phrase was probably invented by kombucha drinking influencers who I once busted playing Club Penguin during the underfunded afterschool program I was barely paid to teach in, here’s what I think it means: letting people out there know you exist, and that they should pay you for your art / services / opportunity to breathe the same air as you.
These days, most people equate building a brand with being on social media. This often sends my students into a panic spiral. Between mental health issues, a lack of time, an unfamiliarity with apps, and just trying to get through the day as a non cis-hetero-male-human, social media can feel like the thing that converts you from the mostly sane modern parent to the full on woman-in-the-attic.

The truth is, though, you don’t need social media to build your brand. I know this because I, an entrepreneur Aunty, have a brand, that didn’t involve giving Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerburg or any other half-bald founder guy my money. More after the jump!
